Core Canine and Feline Vaccinations

Core Canine Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an essential part of preventative care for pets. Core vaccines are designed to protect dogs and cats from serious illnesses that can affect their health. At Methuen Veterinary Hospital in Methuen, MA, we'll ensure that your pet receives core vaccinations as well as any additional shots it might need.

Core Vaccines for Canines

Puppies can receive their first round of core vaccines at six weeks of age. During this appointment, your pet will receive shots for adenovirus types 1 and 2, parvovirus, and distemper. Over the next 10 weeks, your puppy will receive three doses. Puppies also receive boosters for core vaccinations after their first birthday.

At 12 weeks, dogs receive their first vaccination for rabies. They should receive an additional dose of this vaccine once per year. As adults, dogs will receive additional shots for core vaccines every three years to ensure that they maintain their protection against these diseases.

Core Vaccines for Felines

Kittens can begin receiving core vaccinations at six weeks of age. The first round of shots includes vaccines for calicivirus, distemper, and feline herpes. Typically, felines receive their first shot at six weeks and continue to receive shorts every three to four weeks. This continues until the cat reaches 16 weeks.

When a cat is eight weeks old, it can start shots for the rabies vaccine. After the first shot, the cat will receive a follow-up shot after three to four weeks. Cats should receive a booster shot for rabies once per year.

Cats will receive a booster shot for other core vaccines approximately 12 months after the initial dose. These shots may be spread across two doses that are 3 to 4 weeks apart. Every three years, your cat will require additional booster shots.
